LXDE and KDE 3.5-applications

I bitterly complained in LQ, that the developers in Debian-testing wanted to force me from a good and supple running KDE3.5 into a still unripe KDE4.
One of your honoured members suggested, that I should have a look at LXDE to avoid that vista-feelalike Linux-dependant.
Well, what I saw on the lxde-website looked promising, but sniffing through the forum, I didn't yet find an answer on a quite important question (for me and my girlfriend).
Will we be able, after switching to lxde, to run some KDE3.5-progs still further or would we have to search for alternatives? The main 3 would be kmail, knode and k3b.
Reason, my girlfriend is no computer-adept, she knows how to work with these programs but is very, very reluctant to learn other programs "because you like to fumble around with the sytem". A reasonable argument from her side, alas.
What are the experiences in the forum?

Kind regards.

No clue about kmail or knode, but I still run k3b, smplayer ,k9copy, and Bibletime. For rss/atom feeds I just use Google reader, and either web mail or Zimbra mail client, never did like the way kmail did things.

Wow. You are exactly in the same state as I was many months ago. I did make the switch from KDE3.5 to LXDE and has been happy with the latter.

Regarding your specific questions, I use k3b on LXDE. You might have to specify the device for k3b seems to rely on some KDE features to detect devices. I don't know about the other applications you mentioned.

For whatever it is worth, I continue to use konsole, kaffeine, and korganizer. They work great, except that you again have to tell kaffeine which device to use.

I can't guarantee you'll be happy with LXDE, but I recommend just trying it out. It's easy to switch between the two desktop systems. (I can still login to KDE, if I choose to do so from the login manager.)

Hope this helps,
Ryo

I had to work on a faulty Windows machine (what's new) so I downloaded Knoppix 6 Live CD and was very impressed that the 7 year old computer ran super fast- even with Compiz!

I downloaded and installed LXDE to try out on my Kubuntu machine. All of my KDE (and non-KDE) applications ran fine including Openoffice, Firefox, Quanta Plus, Kruler, Gimp, and others. They all ran very fast and without issues. The only complain I would have is that the widnow decorations were rather... Un-elegant.
