which desktop manager do I replace for gdm or kdm for lxde?
which desktop manager do I replace for gdm or kdm for lxde?
Dear lxde community,
I'm a fresh user for lxde. I got toI install the lxde on sidux very easily but I have a question. I removed the gdm like this: "apt-get remove gdm". But I didn't replace for another desktop manager yet. Thus, I started the desktop by "startx" command. Do you have a sugestion to replace to another desktop manager for lxde? How do I install the new desktop manager on lxde now? I appreciate your hints and clues.
Cheers.

GDM works very well with LXDE.

An lxde DM is being developed. Search the forum for lxdm. I believe it is based off of slim.

slim is Ok, but I find that gdm loads lxde faster. Using gdm I can boot to lxde in under 30 seconds, while slim tends to hang for a few more seconds, plus I can use autologin on my desktop with gdm.

hi
I have used both gdm and slim.
AFAIK I need to configure numlockx if I use gdm?
While I can tweak /etc/slim for numlock and autologin.
To me, slim has less disk space so suits those with smaller drives.
I did have an issue with my panel's logout which I fixed by creaing a desktop logout file calling lxsession-logout.

Dear aus9,
I like best lxde and I had a good impression with sidux, debian and mandriva with it. You're right when you said that slim has less disk space to be consumed. Now, I learned how to tweak for autogin to the slim. I have learned an easier way by using the terminal as follows:
to auto login press run and enter:
gksu leafpad /etc/slim.conf
and scroll down to the end of the file, you will see this lines:
#auto_login yes
#default_user demo
uncomment them by removing # and replace demo with your username.
for your inspiration view my beautifull debian 5.03 lxde deasktop at

It's a little bit x-rated.
now with auto-login with slim.
cheers.
PS: I will talk later on to James Benedito Oliveira (main developer for the epidemic gnu linux) to release an epidemic gnu linux with lxde for the next version in the future.Perhaps (if we have enough available time) for the final release for the epidemic 3.1 which It will happen to sooner. I can' guarantee it because to support two desktop envirognments It's not too easy but I'm inclined to grab the lxde. What do you think about it?

Re: which desktop manager do I replace for gdm or kdm for lxde?
hi
firstly I am still in shock at the um image....lol.......Sorry I have broadband download speed and cap issues which has limited me trying out any distro without some extra money.
For a small distro to get noticed...I think it should be bleeding edge....and sexy and offer something different from mainstream if possible....like non-free codecs and stuff.
It should be available as an usb image so those netbooks (no cd drives) can download and image it to usb and then try it out and if they like it....install to hard drive.
Having seen some network forum posts.....certain wireless devices, mainly on portables that need firmware....would also be a niche market for epidemic. But I use wired so can offer no help in such testing.
But the maintainers all have issues on want they want to achieve so as I am not a developer I refuse to say anything to sidux or epidemic on what I want.......Rest assured if epidemic was a cd only size with lxde ...I would download it when my new monthy cycle starts.....but last time I checked the most recent were only beta dvd isos?
Feel free to correct me if I am wrong
regards
