New windows open partially under taskbar? Hiding Taskbar?

When I open a new application the titlebar of the new window is hidden under the taskbar at the top of the screen. Is there a way to make the taskbar real estate sacred, as I'm used to from gnome and kde?
Second question: is it possible to manually show/hide the taskbar at the top? I know I can set it to autohide/show, but I prefer clicking a little handle on one or both sides to hide and show it.
Thanks

We do set the request to reserve the space, unless you have disabled "treat the panel as dock" in the preferences. Ultimately window positioning is totally under the control of the window manager. We need to know what window manager you are running. If it is openbox, I suggest you make sure you are running the latest version 3.4.11; I think this was a flaw (at the top edge) in some earlier versions. Trying with Compiz, I find that the title bar is covered, as you report. As an experiment you could try moving your panel to the bottom temporarily.
We do not offer any way to hide the panel manually at this time.

Thanks. I am using openbox. I think I solved it by setting a border at the top equal to the height of the panel (sorry for calling it taskbar) but I'm not at that machine and can't recall where I found the option, just that it seemed to work.
Please consider this a request to add manual panel hiding - or is there a proper place to request features? I find the autohide surprisingly distracting but am using lxde on a small screen where real estate is at a premium. Of course hiding the panel is silly when I've set that portion of the screen as a border, as noted above, but life is full of compromises.

Playing with openbox a little more, I see that when you drag a window toward the panel, there is some resistance to doing it and if you keep dragging, it will go under the panel. This happens on all four edges. I have not been able to get a new window to open with the title bar covered. I do remember that this was a problem in an older openbox release. If this happens, there is little lxpanel can do about it; it is a problem in the window manager, assuming we have set the strut properly, which I did confirm. You can recover by moving the panel to another edge temporarily to get at least part of the title bar uncovered so you can drag the window.

I used the alt-left-click+drag to move the windows down a tad but found it a distraction. I hadn't really noticed the resistance until you mentioned it, but set that higher and that, with the windows no longer appearing under the panel, makes it seem more intuitive.
Thanks
