I'm using U-Lite. The installation is about a week old. I logged in and the lower panel is missing.

Take a look in .config/lxpanel/LXDE/panels and see if any of the files look corrupted, like part is obviously missing. They aren't rocket science to see how they are organized.

Thanks for the reply Marty Jack.

The panels directory only had a "top" file and no "bottom". I deleted the"top" file, and then deleted the "panels" directory and then rebooted. Now both panels are once again present.

An unrelated question: Everything looks somewhat out of focus and is hard on the eyes. This is the case no matter what monitor I use. Is this a characteristic of LXDE? The monitors I've tried only go up to 85Hz (at 1024 x 768), but usually an 85 Hz display isn't this hard to look at.

LXDE doesn't do a thing to mess with your screen. This is one of the design philosophies -- we don't do anything behind your back that you don't explicitly ask for.

Try looking in /var/log/Xorg.0.log where it derives the monitor resolution -- and check with xrandr -- to see if maybe your display isn't at the resolution/refresh rate you were hoping for.

The cause of the blurriness turned out to be the three cheap CRT monitors I had tried. When I used a higher quality Dell Trinitron it looked fine, even at 85Hz. Thanks again.
