LXDE for LTSP5

quick question,

is there a way to code something, that suppresses HAL when the environmental variable "LTSP_CLIENT" exists??
In gnome this is somewhere within gnome-session.

this would make LXDE usable with LTSP.

Greetings from belgium, sascha

I am sure you could get it working with the help of your distro and the LTSP people. Bear in mind that LXDE is not a distro, it is a small set of packages that you can run instead of one of the other environments like GNOME, KDE, or Xfce.

Hi Marty Jack,

if running a Server with several clients, small desktops give more stability, especially with old clients, therefor LXDE would be a nice alternative to gnome or KDE.

Like I said in my first post, actually all that would be to do is to provide an alternative LXDE-session script as suppressor of HAL, to hide the "shutdown-reboot-hibernat" options in LXDE.
In Debian the user has to be in group powerdev to see this buttons.
On our server we use Ubuntu 9.10 that does not provide a group called power or powerdev, nor a group that couvers those functions.
At this time gnome and kde are the only desktop envs that can be used on ubuntu with ltsp, but we all know the problems of kde in ubuntu, so gnome is left.

greetings, sascha

The git head of lxsession has some improvements to the HAL support where we actually query HAL to see what is authorized before we display the buttons.
I will release that in a short while after it gets some additional testing.

Rest assured that even if the button is there, it won't do anything unless the user is authorized.

LTSP support has been available in git for some time. I have initiated a discussion about making a release.
