They work in Gnome, anyone know how to enable them? (On screen display icons for sound etc. when fn+Fnn are pressed).

OK, partially solved it by running gnome-settings-daemon from a runbox. How can I run it every time I boot up?

turn it on with lxsession-edit.
or, add it to autostart manually. See the wiki for detail.

I get the following error message from ./configure
checking for GTK... configure: error: Package requirements (gtk+-2.0 >= 2.12.0) were not met:
No package 'gtk+-2.0' found
Running ubuntu intrepid. What am I missing?
:EDIT: Got it, sudo apt-get install libgtk2.0-dev
