network panel icons

I run LXDE in Debian Lenny. As main user I see two network icons in the bottom panel on the right, whereas as a "normal" user, which does not belong to the administrator group, I have no icon at all. Is there something I can do about this? The normal user is also not able to set the network without such an icon of wicd/networkmanager.

If when you have the two icons visible you would right click on each and report the plugin type that is reported in "<something> Settings" and "Remove <something> from Panel", we can go from there. If the answer is "System Tray", you will have to determine what application is displaying the icon and contact Debian or the application for help on why it doesn't display in the environments in which it is missing.
