The binary was in the directory directly above the lib dir, so it should have had no problem - and, when run from a terminal cded into its directory, it didn't have a problem. This seems to me to indicate that pcmanfm 0.9.7, unlike pcmanfm-legacy, Thunar, Nautilus, or for that matter ROX, doesn't actually enter the directory it's working in.
