lxterminal tabs (how to reduce size)

Hi,
I like to use small fonts to have more space available for text.
I used gnome-terminal before.
after i switched to lxterminal, i liked it. it had everything that i needed. however, the tabs take a lot of space. is there a way to reduce their size or to get rid of the tab bar?
my solution right now is just to use screen
