I have a working installation of Debian (testing) gnome and if I do a "aptitude install lxde".
Believe that everything will work seamlessly.
Will be trying out soon
Wondering if I installed only lxde on Debian (using the debian-500-i386-xfce+lxde-CD-1.iso), without the original gnome installation,
what other packages will I need to install to get a fully working desktop that can play the usual stuff (desktop for home with kids) ?
e.g. gstreamer ?
Hope to get some advise from the experts here
Besides lxde , what else do I need

Hmm, it just depends on your needs. But at least I would recommend a web browser (Firefox/Iceweasel) and some kind of multimedia application. I like audacious for music and (g)xine for videos.
But it only depends on your needs.

Maybe LXDE is installed to save some resources. And compiz would eat them again.
