How does the xscreensaver work?

I'm using LM 10 LXDE which comes with xscreensaver. This program makes no sense to me. It just makes my screen blank, disconnects my internet connection and takes me back to the login screen. I don't see any setting to have a screensaver start automatically after say 20 minutes. Could someone explain to me how this thing works? Thanks.

1. xscreensaver it's not part of LXDE
2.
or
(like in all apllications) output of "-h":

All xscreensaver configuration is via the `~/.xscreensaver' file.
Rather than editing that file by hand, just run `xscreensaver-demo':
that program lets you configure the screen saver graphically,
including timeouts, locking, and display modes.
Just getting started? Try this:
xscreensaver &
xscreensaver-demo
