Windows and desktop icons dissappear

I'm having this strange problem that's getting on my nerves where all my file manager windows and my desktop shortcuts disappear. I can still reopen pcmanfm but my desktop shortcuts won't come back until I log out and log back in. Any suggestions?

Have a look at ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs. This is where you edit directories in your home directory - especially important for re-establishing system directories like Desktop.

it sounds like pcmanfm is crashing.
pcmanfm is lxde's file manager, but also manages the icons that appear on your desktop, and the background picture.
does something you or your computer do trigger the crashes?
what kind of system are you running? did you make changes to it? or major upgrades/updates?
