Hello,

I have Lubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander installed and my problem is how do I edit the LXPanel menu?

However I fine with creating custom .desktop files which work perfectly for adding start menu entries to already established menus e.g. Diablo II under Wine-Programs or Hardinfo under Accessories. What I want to do is add new start menu sections and alter some of the sections such as Games to display the menu entries to my own preferences. This I cannot seem to do!

I have tried Alacarte (From the Ubuntu repositories) which screwed up the Wine entries (which incidentally was rescued by deleting ~/.cache/menus/23cdab6ec1465592c20ec24e052bb7a and rebooting), LXMenuEDitor (LXMED) from: http://sourceforge.net/projects/lxmed/ and menulibre from ppa:menulibre-dev/devel . LXMED and menulibre have some ability to create .desktop files but I do not seem to be able to create or alter LXPanel menu sections. Following laurent kubaski's tutorial I was expecting to see the 'custom menu entries' as shown in the screenshots on their tutorial however there is nothing! Am I missing something? Have I screwed a file? Help! Thanks

The "How To articles" are quite good. I followed the first and it appears to work fine. Are you sure that you are not leaving a step out?

I have followed Laurent Kubaski's tutorials exactly except for omitting the lines '[laurent@localhost desktop-directories]$ cat ~/.local/share/desktop-directories/custom_menu.directory' in the menu sections tutorial. I had come across the lxlinux page before however I had read elsewhere that altering the menu at /etc/xdg/menus/lxde-application.menu caused more problems than it solved as when the package that controls that updates it would erase any alterations. Is that understanding wrong?

I have even tried creating a new user and it doing it with a new user in case there was something causing a problem in my home directory where it worked once but then had a segmentation fault crash and dissappeared. I dumbly deleted the user and files in haste as I don't know how to use crash files and I have been unable to recreate it.

You should have no problem editing the category sections of the LXDE menu provided you follow exactly the procedure described in http://lxlinux.com/#9. There is nothing sacred about /etc/xdg/menus/lxde-application.menu. Just follow the directions. If you want additional categories, they will have to show up here, and I know of no GUI for doing this.
