DPMS with LXDE

Hi-
I'm using LXDE with SparkyLinux on an old Dell laptop. I'd like to have the LCD display backlight power down after a certain time. I know that I can do this with a command like in any of various files. Experimentation showed that I had to kill the XScreen-saver process in order for this to work.
So, I was wondering, is there a proper way to power down the LCD backlight, using some sort of menu choice within LXDE?
Thanks
