LXDE and LXQt

Post by schnappi »

Love LXDE. Was wondering. Is LXQt the official successor to LXDE or even officially related to LXDE? Will both continue to exist and be supported? LXDE and LXQt repositories are both owned by same group on GitHub (https://github.com/lxde)...so think that know the answer but wanted to gain a better understanding of relationship between LXDE and LXQt.

Historically, LXQt is the product of the merge between LXDE-Qt, an initial Qt flavour of LXDE, and Razor-qt, a project aiming to develop a Qt based desktop environment with similar objectives as the current LXQt. LXQt was first supposed to become the successor of LXDE one day but as of 09/2016 both desktop environments will keep coexisting for the time being. Check here https://github.com/lxde/lxqt/wiki/History for a short history lesson.

I can remember a while back that LXQt was intended to be a replacement for LXDE. I think most people still believe this because it was the original message. If you intend to keep LXDE alive you should be much more clear about that because people think it is a dead project. The web site seems to assume that the project is still alive, but that could just be because LXQt isn't ready yet. I'm just trying to let you know that you have a public relations problem right now. You need to get the word out that LXQt does not mean the end of LXDE. I personally would very much like to see LXDE live on. But, if people think that it is dead then they're not going to install it or contribute to it's development. I know because I've been thinking that and I really had to dig to find the truth that it is not dead. And the passive way that you're communicating that it's not dead does not inspire confidence. I don't mean to be critical I'm just trying to alert you to the problem.

It is only Lubuntu that has committed to changing to LXQT. There are many other LXDE distros. Add to this that there are many of us that use a "PCOB" desktop - just start with PCmanfm and OPenbox. So the idea that LXDE and minimal desktops with independent components are dying is far from true. Actions speak louder than words, and the revitalized lxde, openbox and pcmanfm websites are a testimony that these components are thriving more than ever before. The PCOB desktop, which is basically LXDE, is so polished and stable that users do not have the problems that plague newer desktops. So our forums are relatively quiet. Below is a picture of my PCOB desktop with the root menu and sysinfo pipemenu open. It is rock stable even though built on Debian TESTING. Notice the kernel is 4.14.0-3, which was almost the bleeding edge when this picture was taken.

HI Seppalta -I am very interested in a minimal LXDE and OpenBox OS. I really enjoy core Lubuntu 16.04, but 18.04 doesn't really offer that option right now and with LXQT coming with Lubuntu, I am looking for a way to get a basic LXDE OS. Can you tell me more about how to create the PCOB you are referring to? I am not a complete newbie, but as much detail you can provide with be appreciated.

Thanks!

I generally start with a minimal (no-codecs) Sparky Linux rolling system: https://sparkylinux.org/download/rolling/#minimal. For configuration, see http://lxlinux.com, and the links there-in.

Thanks Seppalta - I installed the minimal Sparky and it looks great! Do you by chance know of other minimal distros where I can add the LXDE desktop or have suggestions on how to find them?

Thanks!

Not with the sophistication of Sparky. The beauty of Sparky is an active developer who actively and continuously controls updates; thus, it has the advantage of cutting edge and stability. Crunchbang++ is currently good, but appears to have only 1 developer who looks at it only once a year; therefore, it is a bit of a gamble.
