Same probleme here.
Dual screen works good.
On laptop resolution of 1280x800 (something like that).
On screen resolution of 1440x900 and impossible to strech the wallpaper more than 1280x800.
It appears a "gap" in the wallpaper which catch the image of the windows which move in front of it.
With compiz, it appears as a real gap, i can see inside the cube throught it.

Sorry for bad english.

What I did was to turn off pcmanfm from managing the desktop and I use nitrogen which gives me images on both monitors. I can choose between stretching one image across both, showing same image in each monitor or choose different images for each monitor. Since I do not use icons on my 'desktop' anyway, this has worked out well for me. I use gentoo and it is available in portage and probably most other distro package management systems. it can be loaded on startup to restore your backgrounds with
nitrogen --restore &

now i am just looking for a way to have different backgrounds in different desktops.
