I tried out LXDE on my Ubuntu 8.10 system but now I want to go back to the default Gnome desktop. I went into Synaptic and uninstalled LXDE but it didn't revert back. What to I need to do? Thanks.

You need to choose the default Desktop Environment for your user session.
If you are using gdm, there is a button "sessions" on the login screen, click it, choose GNOME, ok, save as default, login and you should have Gnome back as default.

For some reason, the login screen resolution is so low that all I see is the user name and password prompts. How can I increase the login screen resolution to see the other buttons?

I ran sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg per
http://www.simplehelp.net/2007/04/30/ho ... -for-os-x/ (or a similar page since I had to logout) and this increased the login screen resolution to where I see everything and change the window manager back to Gnome.
Thanks.
