Loc-OS 23

Post by Ziggi »

Loc-OS 23 - https://sourceforge.net/projects/loc-os/

Over 2,000 weekly downloads

THE BEST CHOICE
Loc-OS Linux

Loc-OS is a GNU/Linux distribution focused on low resource consumption. Being very lightweight it is able to run perfectly on older computers, although it also runs on more modern computers.

The most recent version is 23 codenamed "Con Tutti". It is a fork of Debian 12, has SysV init and there are three desktops available, LXDE in 32 and 64 bits, Xfce just in 64 bits (remembering that the main and lighter version is with LXDE) and the new flavour just out of the oven, KDE Plasma (in 32 and 64 bits).

Loc OS has dropped Midori browser for latest release and now offers choice of browser to be installed – Chrome or FireFox :) Nice touch
Menu and folder headers now in language of your choice.

Loc-OS still has four ready made themes available in just two clicks :)
For those who like such – WinXP, Neon, iOS or default :)

Video recorded and edited on 10+ year old Dell-Latitude E6420 BIOS: Dell v: A17 date: 03/07/2013 NVIDIA GF119M [NVS 4200M] driver: nouveau

BTW I still use Antix-LXDE on even older HP G60 3GiB Laptop bought 2009 as my everyday laptop - it has larger screen and a number pad.
It now has a new faster SSD TEAM T253X1240G drive :)
Super efficient LXDE using just 88MiB to 160Mib RAM with huge menu of apps.

Those guys over at Antix are still saying that – zzz-IceWM desktop: 171M – LXDE desktop: 179M withering on about 8MiB RAM. I am using just 150MiB RAM with my setup. 8-) Perhaps another imgur video is required :) showing massive menu and minimal RAM :)

Happy New Year to all :)

There is a new Loc-OS iso at https://sourceforge.net/projects/loc-os/
Could not find anything new besides the updated custom Loc-OS kernel 5.10.214 – For you Guys it will be just as easy to customise as previous versions. As for myself everything is just fine with the previous kernel – so lightening fast and stable with just 198MB of RAM used at idle. :geek:

My setup has a lot of items removed, then a lot of applications added for making and editing images and movies along with 3D modelling with Blender.
All my extras are installed via the excellent Synaptic Package Manager as it resolves all dependencies both for installation and complete removal :)
For myself I remove LPKG as it is not needed however you Guys may want to use it for installing games etc. https://info.loc-os.com/index.php/lpkg-gui/

Here is the English translation using DeepL

LPKG GUI

This is a small GUI for the LPKG package manager. The idea is to make it even easier without need of any commands. This software is located in menu, preferences, LPKG Software Manager or straight from the 'Control Centre'

When you open it, you will be prompted for the super user password. It is important that you update the repository list. To do that click on the UPDATE LIST button.

Installing a package is very easy, just click on the desired package and click on the INSTALL OR REINSTALL button. Remember that LPKG does not resolve dependencies, if a program does not open you should check which dependency you are missing. And if you don't know how to resolve dependencies you can see the dependencies at https://t.me/locoslinux.

All packages are tested before uploading them to the repository, nothing is uploaded untested, by this I mean that all packages work perfectly. ;)

One of the current problems is that you can only install one package at a time.

When it comes to games; I know next to nothing: :?
M.A.R.S. - a ridiculous Shooter with outstanding 2D-graphics and particle effects is only used to ensure graphics components and nouveau driver are fully functional at full speed https://sourceforge.net/projects/mars-game/
Guess you guys are well up to speed… :D but Nico writes...

Epic Games

There are two good ways to run Epic Games games on Linux. One of them is with Lutris and the other is the one we will see in this article, with Heroic Games Launcher.

There are two ways to install this client in Loc-OS, the "easiest" is from terminal with sudo apt install heroic, since Heroic Games Launcher is available in our repository (you will also find it in synaptic to install it graphically). And the other way is to install it from their website.

Its site is: https://heroicgameslauncher.com/

In the Download part you will find three types of packages compatible with Loc-OS, Flatpak, Appimage and Deb. I recommend the last one and even more so if your PC has limited resources.

After installing the package you must open Heroic Games Launcher, log in with your Epic Games account and choose language.

These games are Windows games, you will need Wine or Proton. On the left side you will find the Wine Manager, where you can install and remove different versions of Wine and Proton with just one click. I recommend to always use the latest versions that are available at the moment.

INSTALLING GAMES

Everything ready to start playing, we only need to install some game, for that we choose the desired game from our library and click on the yellow INSTALL button. :geek:
