Desktop icons and wallpaper

I like to keep a clean desktop with no icons, but I also like to change my wallpaper frequently. There doesn't seem to be a way to have it both ways on the PCMan desktop: either I can have icons and the ability to change my wallpaper, or no icons and stuck with the default. I've tried setting my wallpaper and then unchecking "Manage the desktop and show file icons" in Preferences, but if I log out and then log back in, it reverts to the default.
Is there a way to have my cake and eat it, too?
