I've developed two patches and I hope this is the right place to post them (if not, please tell me where to send).

The first patch improves the locale determination. It is possible now to have a set LC_LANGUAGE like ab_CD.XYZ and files under /usr/share/locale/ab which is exactly what you'll get with the Linux console.

The second patch improves the determination of generic icons by reading the mime/generic-icons file.
