How do I customize the menu?

Hi,
I have a lot of specialized multimedia apps in my distro that I'd like to create additional menu items for, In the past I've used Gnome and KDE which have tools for Menu Customizing. In LXDE I've downloaded the lxmenu-data and libmenu cache packages, created new ".directory" files in /usr/share/desktop-directories. I've also named them with the same naming convention as the other lxde .directory files that are there and pointed them to a common existing category "Audio;" and lastly checked the appropriate permissions. These new directories are not appearing in my Menu even after a logout. What am I missing? It would be nice if changing directories was as easy as adding ".desktop" files to /usr/share/applications.
