No wireless access

Hello,
I installed LXDE on a Gateway laptop running Ubuntu 9.04, or possibly Edubuntu 9.04, which I am trying to get rid of (the Edubuntu).
Anyway, I can't seem to find a way to engage wirelessly. I found the Network and can plug in a LAN to my router and get online, but can't find a wireless selection.
Also, when I do plug in, I can't find a way to break off the network connection except to physically unplug the LAN cable. Right clicking the network icon doesn't do anything.
I have a Broadcom Wireless card that works with Ubuntu, could that be it? Incompatible hardware?
Thanks!
