I was looking for a leightweight GUI for my laptop running suse11.0 (up to now KDE4) and I installed LXDE. Installation went smoothly but the taskbar is not racting to any click or mouseover. I cannot open anything with the application launcher, the icons on the taskbar are not working, I cannot even switch between the desktop. Tried a reinstall but still the same result. KDE works fine. What went wrong?

Please be a bit more verbose, what distro are you using? What version Number of LX* are you using? ...

As written before the distro is opensuse11.0 (with KDE4 desktop at the moment). I used the1click install from http://www.susegeek.com/general/lxde-li ... use-linux/ which installed e.g. lxde-common-0.4.1-2.1, lxpanel-0.4.1-2.1, lxlauncher-0.2-8.7, lxmenu-data-0.1-2.2, etc. Computer is an x86_64 machine. I don't know if that is what you want to know but I only get the view of the desktop with nothing working. I went through the list of packages on the LXDE wiki page and checked - all of them are installed. Some configuration file in the /etc/xdg directory found but nothing obvious that is wrong. In the home directory are some files in ~/.config but there too nothing anything obvious. I have not seen any documentation on settings anywhere either.

Sorry, haven't read that you are using Suse. Have you tried, to upgrade LXPanel? it's quite old, currently 0.5.3 is available. Beside this, I don't know why your desktop has this strange behavior. Maybe you X isn't set up correctly, and KDE has a workaround for that, what ever. Sry I can't really help.

there is no newer version in the repository for suse11.0. I don't want to install it from a tar file as it will not be in the rpm database for further upgrading. I tried other GUIs which are working so I don't think it is an Xconfiguration problem. Only the lxde desktop is like a background picture (with limited functions with rightclick but no menu from the task bar.) So will have to use another desktop GUI - at least for now.

Problem solved - first I used the following repository (entered whit the 1-click install feature):
http://download.opensuse.org/repositori ... nSUSE_11.0
No matter what I could not get it to work and it always had the main menu like a background picture. On the Suse website I found this repository:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositori ... SUSE_11.0/
With this LXDE installed without problem and the desktop is working now and lxpanel is version 5.3!
