Connect to another machine by IP address

I am looking to use lxde on an Ubuntu server. I will only use it when necessary.

On the 'normal' unbuntu desktop I can connect to a PC on my LAN by IP in the file manager to transfer files (VMs). I know I could use Samba etc but I do not need that. Is it possible?

As it stands I create a file in root that anyone can access then boot using a desktop live CD and transfer the files that way but this means shutting the server down!

Cheers

Hi

You can use gtk-netcat for this. They Gui should be self-explanatory. Use Ports above 1024 (i guess this number) or you need root access.

There are plenty of options available to do this. ssh / avahi / giver (http://tombuntu.com/index.php/page/3/) are few to say.
