Welcome to the LXDE forum. Have you tried the simplest solution? Right click on a photo and select "Open With". Perhaps that doesn't show up. "Right-click --> Open With" doesn't show Shotwell Viewer in the options. But I did find a solution, although I don't know if it's the off...

How do I set Shotwell Viewer as the default image viewer?
I have Shotwell installed,as it is my preferred photo manager. I assume Shotwell Viewer was installed along with it. Now when I open the Preferences > Preferred Applications tool, only the Web Browser and Email client are there; no entry for Image Viewer. I am using Debian and `update-alternatives` ...
