How add Firefox, or item, to panel, move it, icon discussion

Post by woodsmoke »

How to add Firefox launcher to the panel, or any item, how to move the launcher, and "black box symbol" for Firefox icon discussion.

MORE EXPERIENCED FORUM MEMBERS SHOULD read this and EDIT AS THEY PLEASE< YOU DO NOT NEED TO ASK MY PERMISSION, permission is here granted, because I PROBABLY made at least one mistake, this is just my "help others" as it were and I needed to do it myself so I wrote down my steps. ;)

This is derived from several other threads, I just thought that I'd collect everything here.

This assumes that you have never added an icon to the panel. therefore it will state what will be OBVIOUS to many probably several times.

Right click on the panel and click "add/remove panel items".

In "Linuxese" this would be written : go to: panel/add/remove panel items.

In add remove panel items go to the Panel Applets tab.

In "Linuxese" this would be written go to: panel/add/remove panel items/Panel Applets tab.

Look down through the Panel applets and you should NOT see a mention of "browser" or Firefox.

Click the "add" button.

In Linuxese this would be written:

panel/add/remove panel items/Panel Applets tab/add button.

You may see a browser plugin, if you do it is probably to Konqueror, with which we will not deal.

You should see several "Application Launcher Bar". If you click them, and one should be empty or may have Konqueror, you may also see a "manila folder" and the Konqueror symbol in the panel.

However, we want to place Firefox there.

MY particular placement on the panel was all the way to the right, if that occurs to you, I will deal with it later on in this post.

This is derived from other posts, and seems rather "round about" to me, but it does work.

Close the menu box for add/remove and right click the panel item for Konqueror and remove it.

Go to "my documents" on the desktop and click it, you will see a box with probably folders for desktop, documents, music, pictures etc.

Place your cursor in the "search bar" at the top, it "should" say something like:

/home/YOUR NAME.

Place the cursor to the right of your name and backspace to the left most "forward slash"...something like "/" and hit enter.

You should now see a bunch of folders that say something like "bin" "boot" etc.

Go to USR folder and then to the SHARE folder then APPLICATIONS and you should see firefox.

This would be written in "Linuxese": usr/share/applications/Firefox.

Go to "tool" tab and click "open current folder as root".

You cannot, as of my situation just drag the Firefox symbol onto the desktop, you have to copy and paste.

NOTE: There is no icon for Firefox for me, and may be the same for you, all you will see is the text, mine says :Firefox Web Browser.

When you have the link on the desktop then either "back arrow" up out of PCman or close and click My Documents again.

Place the cursor in the search bar and backspace to where you see:

"/home"

When you hit enter you should see a folder with your name.

You can drag the Firefox Web Browser into this foler(not your "name folder) without becoming root, so do so.

Again, in my case I see only the text.

Again right click on the panel and open "add remove click Application Launch bar and the add button.

Now this is kind of tricky for me to write so......

Under the "Panel Applets" tab you will see a bunch of things on the panel, there will be SEVERAL...... note that........SEVERAL...."Application Launch Bar"items.. .....click the first once to where it is highlighted and then go to the "Edit" button on the right and click it.

Depending on what your configuration is, one of them will have the words: Firefox Web Browser in it.

FF may be the only item or it may be one of several. If it is the only one it will be highlighted, if it is not the only one then use the up/down arrow keys to get it highlighted and then click add.

Then close and you will see Firefox in the Panel Applets, just close, do not tick the box next to it since, as of this writing, it "stretches" the panel and you don't want that.

Close and it will be on the panel to the bottom right.

WE CAN STOP HERE OR WE CAN GO ON. ;)

Going on:

Two situations that you may have that are of conern are:

a) that FF is now on the bottom right of the panel.
b) it has no icon and shows some kind of little black box with a white outline.

A) Moving FF launcher from the bottom right of the panel to another position.

do this.

panel/add/remove panel items/find appropriate "Application Launch Bar" item.

Hopefully you knew that the above said, "Go to the panel, right click on it and select "add/remove panel items/ and then find the appropriate Application Launch Bar item.

The appropriate one SHOULD be at the bottom. If it is click it once to highlight it.

Then click the "up arrow" that is on the right, each click will move the item to the LEFT in the panel. If you watch you will see it move.

Place it where you wish and close the Panel Preferences box.

B) No Icon for Firefox there is only a black box with a white outline.

In other distros, usually, in the properties box, there is a square for the "icon" and you can search for it and use it. However, with this particular version of LXDE, at least, that is not so. That is neither good or bad, it is just the way it is at this stage, please read on.

Here is a post about not being able to use Mozilla icons as of now.
He is asking about the icon being missing ...

There are some licensing issues concerning usage of the Mozilla icons. This is best taken up with the Ubuntu people, since we did not supply Firefox.

The icon should be placed in /usr/share/pixmaps or somewhere under /usr/share/icons/hicolor and the /usr/share/applications/whatever.desktop should reference it. These are standard locations defined by freedesktop.org. You could look there to see if it is as simple as a naming mismatch.

As to editing the menu, you manually place a .desktop file in /usr/share/applications
There ARE A COUPLE OF FOLLOW ON POSTS about the icon which you could read also.

Hi I was asked to indicate "why" I put Firefox.desktop on the desktop and there are basically two reasons.

a) Because I'm just lazy. When it is on the desktop you don't have to work as root and root is tedious.
b) I hadn't done anything with LXDE before and when I went to 'add/remove panel items/Panel Preferenced/Panel Applets/Pick one of the Application Launch Bar items/edit" I saw that the items there were ....on the desktop! So, I figured that the default arrangement was to put stuff on the desktop.

If I have this wrong then someone should IMMEDIATELY correct me, since I'm not experienced in LXDE only Ubuntu and some Debian.

Oh I see ;)

If I get you right, you mean that the arrangement of the Icons in LXPanel is defined by the arrangement of the Icons on the desktop? If yes it's wrong, yo can change the order like you want with the up and down buttons in the same dialog, in which you can add new starters.

Or did you mean that all "starters" in the panel have to be on the Desktop, too? I for one use the *.desktop files from /usr/share/applications and they are not placed on my desktop.

You can also put *.desktop files for your own personal use in /home/yourusername/.local/share/applications

I run Debian and just recently decided to use Firefox rather than Icwweasel. So I created a Firefox.desktop , then opened pcmanfm as root and copied the Firefox.dekstop to /usr/share/applications , right clicked the panel for Applications Launch Bar Settings > Add> choose Firefox.
