close window by double-clicking title bar icon

Post by marinara »

when double-clicking the left icon on the title bar. The window menu comes up, then closes.
Is there a way to change the behavior of this?

specifically, I want a double click on the icon on the title bar to close the window.
just like this post:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1735983

Yes, it is possible? Or no, it is not possible? :)

Hi marinara
Openbox is a highly configurable, minimalistic window manager.
Run obconf which opens the Openbox Configuration Manager.
Or select it from the main menu, under 'Preferences'.
If it is not there you will need to install it.
Click the tab 'Appearance'.
There is a text box where you can set the order of the buttons.
So you might want to use the code CLMS or similar.
Close, Label, Maximize, Shade.
I don't know (yet) how to make the buttons 'double click'.

thanks kjdixo for the short reply.

Still looking for an expert who can say if this is possible or not.

Marinara
In your first sentence you say:
'when double-clicking the left icon on the title bar. The window menu comes up, then closes.
Is there a way to change the behavior of this?'
Then you say you would like the button to 'close the window'.

So I understand this to mean: you want to change the button from a Window Icon 'N' (where a window menu appears), to a Close button 'C'.
Have you followed the steps I described in my previous post?
As described in my post, you can change the button to a 'Close' button.
1. Run obconf.
2. Click Appearance.
3. Add or remove or change buttons as required.

So I showed you that it is possible.
Note: The buttons are single click, not double click.
Also the close 'C' button does not have a 'window icon' whereas the Window menu Icon 'N' does.

not the appearance. When you doubleclick on the title-bar icon, it shouldn't change appearance.

What I'm used to, and it works this way now in ms-windows. if you do nothing but double click on the title-bar icon, it closes the window.

So, double clicking on the title-bar should maximize restore the window, and double-clicking on the title-bar icon should close that window. clicking once on the title-bar icon should open thattitle-bar menu.

Thanks again!

**Edit I said task-bar i meant to say title bar

Hi Marinara
We might be talking cross-purposes here.
You started by asking about the title bar (as your topic title states 'Re: close window by double-clicking title bar icon').
Your window (with title bar) is presumably any open window of the Openbox window manager.
Then in your most recent post, you have changed 'the thing you are clicking on', from the title bar icon to a taskbar icon and the taskbar.
Also in your most recent post you mention MS Windows taskbar. Having not used windows for a very long time, I am probably not the best person to be helping here. I even switch off the taskbar in Linux desktops as I find it distracting. Usually a mouse 'middle click' gives me a list of running applications and gives me a shortcut to restore any of them.
When I get a spare moment I will go into LXDE and switch on my taskbar to see if I can replicate the MS Windows behavior. I hope you can follow what I have been saying.

Ok. Thanks for updating that Marinara.
For anyone reading this and getting confused, there has been an edit to Marinara's post to change the word 'task bar' to 'title bar'. I could also edit or delete my posts to reflect this, but for the time being I will simply record the fact and continue.
Marinara.
Please confirm that the following would give you some of the functionality you are looking for:
Add an Iconify (minimize) button to the title bar.
This would be like in MS Windows.
A button with a 'minus symbol' on it to minimize individual running applications to the taskbar.

1. Run obconf (Openbox Configuration . . . it should also be in the LXDE menu).
2. Click Appearance.
3. Add or remove or change buttons as required.
The configuration code to enter for an Iconify button is the letter 'I'. Close is 'C'. Shade (roll up) is 'S' etc.

Unfortunately some parts of Linux still retain strange configuration procedures (typing in of text rather than multiple choice buttons) and that can scare away some people who are more familiar with MS Windows. Windows also has some complicated configurations but the average user can usually avoid those by sticking with the default settings.
