I think it is essential to have mouse over tips on bottom panel.
I cannot find out how to do this. Yes I can add launchers, but it is a mystery what each does, until you try clicking each and memorizing the function. End users just rely on these, these days.

Re: Panel lacking mouse over tips
Are you talking about a brief description of what it is? If you are, that exists in Lubuntu 12.04. I seem to remember it in previous versions as well but my memory is not always reliable. What OS are you using?

I am using Ubu 12.04 with lxde from synaptic.
So it is the lxde taskbar/panel items that lack the hover tips, which instruct a new or casual user what the items do before clicking them.

Lubuntu uses LXDE. It sounds like you got a bad download or installation because we are both using the same LXPanel. Try uninstalling and then reinstall.

Are you saying your panel has hover tips? Only my clock does.
I hardly think I have a bad lxde. Maybe there is some config entry where hover tip is turned off, hidden. If so, I want to know. LXPanel 0.5.8
I am running a P4 2ghz 1 meg ram.
Nothing is hanging, running smoothly. In fact, faster than my Mothers new quad core with windows 7. Faster than the dual core in my living room. This machine is not yet a teenager, nor of legal drinking age. Age 40 is when most computers start to get old, right?

Re: Panel lacking mouse over tips
Yes that is what I am saying. I too have 0.5.8.
Computers start to get old when they get shipped from the factory. LXDE makes an older computer behave like a new one. That's why I am using Lubuntu. Well, that is one of the reasons. Another is that I didn't care for Unity at all. I tried other systems (Mint and Bodhi - I really liked Bodhi) and finally settled on Lubuntu.
I checked my /home/rex/.config/lxpanel and found nothing that I could determine had anything to do with the tips. I'm not sure what I am looking at though.

To clarify, I have hover tips on Menu items, just not panel (windows calls it taskbar and tray) items.
Re: Panel lacking mouse over tips
Breakthrough, I just right clicked on window list area to edit "Task Bar Settings". Even though mouse over tips were already enabled, when I clicked close, the hover tips suddenly started popping up for everything except the "Start Menu" Icon.

Re: Panel lacking mouse over tips
I have had that happen to me. I cannot remember exactly what the incident was, but I checked and the desired action was already ticked off. When I closed it, it worked. Don't know why and really don't care because it was working. I have never had a problem with the mouseover tips though. That is a new one. Anyway, I'm glad that you got it working. Enjoy.
