Switching from GDM to LXDM

Post by Grasroot »

Well, I'm running openSuSE 11.2 and I've installed LXDE, now I'm only using LXDE and have started to clean out my GNOME. The problem is that my login is still using the GDM and I want to use the LXDM as login manager. So how should i go about to switch from GDM to LXDM? Should I just uninstall the GDM package? That's a bit risky I think.

So how can i change from GDM to LXDM in a safe way? Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi,

it depends on your distribution. With Archlinux you need to edit the configs, with Ubuntu you are asked and everything is done for you. If there no advice here, you should give the openSuse-forum a try as well.

You really need to get someone from SUSE familiar with the boot mechanism to help.

The basic idea is that you run the display manager from the init process. In the old days you would edit the Runlevel 5 entry in /etc/inittab to be whatever you wanted to start. But now there is systemd and upstart, so it really depends.
