Main Menu settings mistakenly hidden from Main Menu. Ha!

Post by spamhog »

I relied too much on Ubuntu handholding and now I don't know where to do config file surgery.
  • I was pruning the visible applications in the Main Menu configuration dialog.

I saw two instances of a "Preferences" submenu, one in its "right" place, and another that (I think) was nested inside some other category.

I hid the latter, but now the former is completely gone.

AND, of course, where was the "Main Menu" preferences entry? Right in the submenu I zapped.
Catch-22 situation. Must get down to text level.

On my own account I can't identify "Preferences" as part of the main menu at all, as if it had been removed instead of hidden. But I am not sure where it should have been in the first place. I have several other virgin accounts I can fall back on for inspiration, plus there should be a default somewhere.

Which file holds a "Preferences" branch for the main menu?

(Is it standard, or an Ubuntu only thing?)

Thank you in earnest anticipation!

PROBABLY solved (at least on Ubuntu).

The app to call from "Run" is "alacarte", and through it's possible to make "Preferences" visible again, and therefore it's possible again to call "alacarte" as LXDE Menu / Applications / Preferences / Main Menu.

Is this the standard app or just in a gnomified Canonical version of LXDE?

[ I then noticed that most, but not ALL visibility settings in alacarte are reflected in actually visibile menu entries in the LXDE Menu - and now I see this is a much talked about problem here. ]
