[Solved] How does one use LXPanel?

Post by M_Mynaardt »

Hi All!

I'm using some persistent USB installs of Lubuntu, Linux Mint 9 LXDE, and Peppermint OS. I'm using them to figure out how to use LXDE. So I'm still in the midst of the chronically stunned learning curve end of things...

I was using my Linux Mint 9 LXDE install and was going to install LXPanel; only to discover LXPanel was already installed (part and parcel of LXDE, from what I can see, eh?). On the one hand, I managed to figure out how to configure LXPanel from the Open Box Configuration Manager. On the other hand; I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to make LXPanel appear on the GUI. How does one make it appear on the GUI?

I'm sure there's something obvious I'm missing. I just haven't figured out what it is (obviously).

Anyway, if anyone could tell me how to get LXPanel showing up on my screen (as some screen shots I saw in some posts on LXPanel), it would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Okay, from a terminal in Linux Mint 9 LXDE, I got the following:
me@me-mintLXDE-usb ~ $ lxpanel
There is already an instance of LXPanel. Now to exit

Am I doing something wrong? Or is lxpanel the basic desktop GUI of LXDE? Yes, I are konfuzed!

This means, that there's already an instance of LXPanel running. What happens if you kill this instance and start a new one?

btw: could you provide the version of LXPanel (lxpanel -v) or did you tried the latest git-sources?

I don't know how to kill LXPanel. I didn't even know it was running until I tried started it from the terminal.

I wonder if I'm misunderstanding what LXPanel is for. Is it used as a app launching dock, like AWN or Docky? Or is it part and parcel of the LXDE GUI?

you can use LXTask, "killall lxpanel" or "Htop".

I'll try giving that a go sometime.

I do appreciate you're help. Sorry if I'm a bit dim with some of this, but after years of using that other OS, it's just taking me a while to get used to Linux. And I'm trying my best to be somewhat versed in Gnome, Xfce, and LXDE...

But do you think I might be better off trying something like adesktop or conky as app dock? I'm still a bit unsure as to what would be the best to use with LXDE.

1. Ok.

2. Completely normal, just ask :)

3. Never tried adesktop, but I'm using conky for system monitoring here with LXDE.

Thanks; this is the process of learning by trial and error. Of course, what that really means is "mostly error"...

Besides, I long ago learnt, as the old saying goes, it's better to ask and look foolish than to never ask and be foolish! ;)

I'll check out conky then, thanks!
