Normally, after you select LXDE from the login screen, the system remembers that choice and uses it as the default desktop environment for future logins, as long as you don't manually change it again.

If you've already selected LXDE once and it doesn't stick as the default, there could be a minor issue with the session settings, but the process you mentioned should generally work. So, once you've logged into LXDE once, it should continue to be the default until you select a different environment during login.
If this isn't happening for some reason, you might want to check if your .dmrc file is correctly saving the session as lxde.
