Set LXDE as Default

Post by Mildred Ivey »

I installed LXDE on Ubuntu Mate, and I love it! However, I can't find a way to set LXDE as the default login session instead of Mate. I can select it when logging in, but I'd prefer it to be the default. Any tips? :| :|

If you installed lxde after Mate it should already be the default desktop environment (but for some reason it is not). Simple fix and you may have already found it. Select lxde when you log in, it becomes the default DE until you change it at a future login. If it is not changed it will remain the default.

Normally, after you select LXDE from the login screen, the system remembers that choice and uses it as the default desktop environment for future logins, as long as you don't manually change it again.

If you've already selected LXDE once and it doesn't stick as the default, there could be a minor issue with the session settings, but the process you mentioned should generally work. So, once you've logged into LXDE once, it should continue to be the default until you select a different environment during login.

If this isn't happening for some reason, you might want to check if your .dmrc file is correctly saving the session as lxde.

To set LXDE as the default session (so you don’t have to manually select it every time), you’ll want to adjust the default session for your display manager (most likely LightDM on Ubuntu MATE).
