Am I being stupid for using LXDE in 2024?
So, on my first Arch installation I decided to install LXDE as desktop environment due to it's lightweightness (I have a 2 GB RAM PC with Intel Celeron CPU) and retro futuristic look. I have seen on websites that LXDE is unmaintained and people should be using LXQt instead. But I personally don't like the LXQt because it looks too minimalistic and I prefer GTK style over Qt. So, should I stick with my LXDE or should I just migrate to LXQt regardless of what I think about it? Are there any security risks in using an out-of-support desktop environment?
Re: Am I being stupid for using LXDE in 2024?
Hello, same thing. In addition, Qt weighs down the system with the installed elements. Then, between Qt4, barely Qt5, already Qt6. Besides, this explains my DebLight OS project indirectly based on LinuxMint LMDE on LXDE and not on LXQt for its directly GTK side. Otherwise, it would be necessary to manage yet another parallel theme in addition. To date, there seem to be some occasional minimalist updates. On the other hand, on Git, you can find new versions of components for LXDE, like PCManFM for example. With your PC configuration, it is a very good choice. Then, no one reminds us, but LXDE was created for the OpenBox window manager. Some simply use OpenBox when LXDE brings a whole bunch of missing elements.

No you are not stupid
So yes; keep with LXDE and stay free of all the LXQT problems
I used both Manjaro and Endeavour with LXDE desktop which infuriated their moderators for some reason to do with efficiency of resources – RAM. Oh Dear! They got so angry about me quoting their own Arch principle of KISS = Keep It Simple Stupid.
Eventually I tired of the never ending novelty hourly or daily updates.
Remember… If it ain't broke don't try to fix it
Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication
= LXDE
"It seems that perfection is reached not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away"
My principle – Need I say more?
In every instance LXQT, Xfce, IceWM etc will use more resource and be slower in every situation than LXDE on a like for like fully installed distro with all the usual desktop applications loaded.
Fantastic! Unbelievable? I have not even mentioned Wayland - lol
