LXDE is a series of packages. The graphical ones have the usual About dialog that has the version. You could also query your package manager for the version of what you are interested in.

I am CERTAINLY no expert, but have been using debian 5.04 a while.
If it were me suggesting for someone not a guru, I'd suggest:
and then I'd go to Synaptic on the System tools menu, and do a reload, then search for lxde. I only suggest that because I don't know how to do it with apt or aptitude.
My amd64 version of the 5.04 lxde cd install comes up with 0.3.2.1+svn20080509-5 for the major components
PS: Generally, life is a lot easier running the packages the distro provides, because they have all been tested together before release. You might look at LXDE's homepage to see what distros include it, and then at distrowatch to look at the distros. I first saw LXDE on Knoppix 6.2.1, which is derived from debian sid. Knoppix 6.2.1 is using lxde-common 0.5.0-2, which appears to be newer than the version debian 5.04 uses. You might have a look at that one as compared to the debian 5.04 xfce+lxde version, as it includes many more packages and is generally running newer code because its based on sid. If I was to do it over, for debian 5.04, I think I'd install the standard DVD release and then install LXDE onto it as well, and use the LXDE.
