I use gnome-mplayer for everything. Despite the name it is GTK only, on top of mplayer on top of ffmpeg. Build it yourself --disable-schemas-install --without-gconf if your distro pulls in gconf.
You need lame to play mp3's, which some distros do not include by default because of the patent encumbrance. The browser plugin gecko-mediaplayer on top of gnome-mplayer completes the set. Don't know how the RAM load is, but there is nothing more capable than mplayer for playing everything you throw at it.
