Screen Resolution

Post by Webtek »

I am new to the LXDE world and linux and have just recently installed the KNOPPIX system via the 4GB USB flash drive and everything went very well and I was on the internet in minutes.
The only real problem is that I am unable to use a screen resolution of anything higher than 800x600 and would like to use it on a higher res as I am currently using a 1440x900 screen driven by the NVIDIA GeForce 6100 video card under Windows XP . Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to install an appropriate driver - either the binary driver from Nvidia or nouveau. Since you are a newbie I would recommend you to go with the first option. You will find the driver in Nvidia's web page. Unfortunately I am not able to give detailed instructions on how to install those drivers in yours system. I would recommend seeking advice either in Knoppix community or Nvidia community.

With recent kernels, I find nouveau works fine for me (onboard GeForce 9100 graphics). However, I do need a custom xorg.conf file to get my monitor's full resolution with either the nvidia driver or the nouveau driver; my monitor's EDID is not properly reported.
