possible to put ap in root of main menu, not a category?

Is there any way to put an entry for an ap in the root of the main menu as opposed to in a category folder? In other words put entries for launching specific aps without going to a submenu? Failing that, does anyone know of an alternate menu ap I could replace the menu with, that will be more configurable, particularly so I can put both direct entries and submenus in it? Or, if it isn't possible to replace it, at least supplement it with a second menu button that will behave the way I want it to?
