Drag and drop with customized action

What possibilites exists to customize the action taken as a result of a drag and drop operation?

For example I would like to drag an icon (either from the desktop or from a pcmanfm window) to an icon on the desktop or in a pcmanfm window or to the surface of a pcmanfm window and have some customized action to occur instead of moving the file.

This is very specific, I'm not a developer, but I think you'll have to edit the C-source for this.
